At BEA 2006, John Updike was scheduled to speak about his new book, Terrorist, at the Saturday Book and Author Breakfast, along with Barack Obama, Amy Sedaris and Marie Arana. Mr. Updike abandoned his prepared speech in favor of a passionate discussion of books and booksellers — whom he called “the citadels of light.”
This truly was a great moment in BEA history and we’re proud to share it with you again. On behalf of BookExpo America and booksellers and bookbuyers everywhere, John Updike’s passion and support will be missed, but his words will live on forever.
